Methylene Blue Cautions and Warnings

Methylene blue is still being studied for its uses, benefits and side effects. People with certain conditions should avoid use based on studies regarding methylene blue medical treatments. Methylene blue should be used under the advice of a healthcare professional. If adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult your physician immediately.

Methylene Blue is currently sold for research and development purposes only.

Medications:

Methylene blue should not be used in combination with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)- Methylene blue may cause serotonergic syndrome when used in combination with serotonergic drugs.

Nursing and Pregnancy:

Methylene blue use during pregnancy and nursing is not well established and so should be avoided. It may also transfer into breast milk, so it should also be avoided if you’re nursing a child.

Kidney Disease:

Avoid methylene blue in patients with severe kidney impairment. Patients with kidney disease or impaired renal function should avoid or be monitored by a healthcare professional.

Individuals with liver disease or impaired liver function should be monitored closely by a healthcare professional or avoid use of methylene blue since methylene blue is metabolized by the liver.

Individuals with known allergies to methylene blue or other dyes should avoid use.

G6PD:
